With the current construction taking place in downtown Auburn, local speciality gift shop, Auburn Art, and the City of Auburn, have teamed up to take advantage of the work site. Both teams are working to compile and bury a time capsule in front of the Auburn Art store while the ground is broken up during the construction. The time capsule will be nameed “Preserve the Present,” and will be opened in the summer of 2065 – 50 years from now.
Many items that are significant to Auburn will be included in the capsule as well as messages and photos submitted by the public. All members of the Auburn family, from all over the world, are invited to contribute a photo or message. Submissions must be no larger than 4×6 and must be received at Auburn Art no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, July 17. Those wanting to place a submittal may drop off their item at the Auburn Art store or mail it to 102 N. College St. Auburn, Al. 36830.
Also, if you think you have a great idea of something that should be included in the capsule, visit auburnart.com to enter your idea! The goal is to show the future what was important to the Auburn family in 2015.
“We are so excited about the opportunity to bury special memories ad mementos in this time capsule,” said Cliff Hare, owner of Auburn Art. “We hope everyone will submit a photo or message to be included that will give those opening the time capsule in 2065 a glimpse into our lives today.”
Auburn Assistant City Manager, Kevin Cowper added that the City of Auburn is proud to participate in preserving the present.
“As we finish updating Toomer’s Corner for the future, we’re proud to partner with Auburn Art in their plan to preserve the past and present,” he said. “They approached us with a great idea that we’re proud to facilitate.”
