
Scale Back Alabama (SBA) is a free statewide weight-loss program designed to encourage Alabamians to join together to get healthy and to have fun while doing it. Since the first competition in 2007, Alabamians have lost more than one million pounds together! New to 2015, the Auburn and Opelika areas are joining forced to bring you 10 weeks of exciting events to encourage your success! Events will vary from week to week, and will be different each time. Be sure to be on the lookout for more details or any changes that may arise due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
March 6th: Walk Around Downtown Opelika – 6 p.m.
There will be giveaways along the way from downtown stores and small physical activities at specified stops, such as lunges and squats. At the end of the route, there will be a free yoga class/instruction/Q&A from Inner Sunshine Yoga at Courthouse Square. After completing both, visit the new Spa 180 adjacent to the Square for a surprise. Meet at the Courthouse Square to begin the walk. Traditional workout gear: comfortable shoes and clothes that allow you to move freely are recommended!
March 9th: Auburn/Opelika Zumbathon – 5 p.m.
Join your favorite Zumba instructors from the Auburn/Opelika area for a FREE Zumba class! Never tried Zumba before? Now is your chance to get in on the action! Pick the most convenient location at either the EAMC
parking deck in Opelika or the Gay Street parking lot in Auburn and Zumba your way to a healthier lifestyle! Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music. Every one of all ages is welcome! Please wear tennis shoes, appropriate exercise attire and bring a water bottle.
March 19th: Tai Chi at Kreher Preserve and Nature Center – 5:15 p.m
The essence of Tai Chi practice is balance and harmony. Tai Chi allows us the opportunity to slow down and be present in a fast-paced and often stressful world. The slow, gentle, mindful way of moving imparts grace to the body, calmness to the mind and lifts the spirits. An old and respected practice, Tai Chi is being recommended by health organizations around the world as an effective exercise that can improve balance and posture, prevent falls, build immunity, reduce stress and chronic pain, and even promote cognitive function. The instructor, Kitty Frey, is certified in several Tai Chi for Health programs.
March 23rd-29th: Disc Golf – 5:15-6:15 p.m.
The Tumble Tree Disc Golf Course will be open to Scale Back Alabama participants anytime during March 23-29. In order to receive points for attending this event you must come to the Opelika Sportsplex front desk during their open hours in order to get your weigh-in card signed. The Opelika Sportsplex hours are Monday-Friday 5:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., Saturday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Sunday 1:00-5:00 p.m. The Tumble Tree Disc Golf Course is an 18-hole course that crosses bodies of water, travels over inclines and hills and follows trails through the woods. The Tumble Tree Disc Golf Course is FREE for anyone to play, but players are encouraged to bring their own discs and plenty of water when playing the course. March 29th: Auburn University Campus History Walk – 2-3 p.m.
Come join a representative from the Auburn University Healthy Tigers program to take a walking history tour of the Auburn University Campus. This will be a great way to get a walk in around campus. The walk will include stops at key historic buildings to hear the history behind each building. Meet at the Auburn University sign in front of Samford Hall.
