Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn has formed some exciting plans to expand its instructional space to accommodate its student population that is larger than ever before with 719 students.
On Thursday the Auburn Planning Commission will vote on plans for $4 million worth of office and instructional space to be added to the existing buildings campus. The proposed expansion is 29,625 square feet, and a public hearing will precede the vote, according to Planning Commission documents.
The possible expansion would involve the addition of four classrooms to the elementary wing and secondary wing as well as a renovation and addition of space to the school’s activities building, which houses the school’s physical education area, cafeteria and fine arts spaces. A new playground outside the elementary wing would also be built. The construction would also feature larger weight rooms and locker rooms. The addition of a middle school wing is being discussed, but is not yet a definite part of the plans. Currently, the campus does not have enough classrooms, and some teachers are sharing classroom space. Therefore, this expansion is very much needed. However, the goal is accommodate the growth, not necessarily a plan to grow too much larger, as the small, controlled environment is what makes Lee-Scott special.
The expansion is part of a strategic plan that has been adopted and enacted by Lee-Scott’s school board over the past few years. The plan addresses infrastructure, human resources, curriculum and funding.
Pending a recommendation from the Planning Commission, the Auburn City Council would then vote to approve or deny the plans for the expansion. Roberts anticipates the project will be completed before the beginning of the fall 2016 school year.
