Usually I do try to hit these events BEFORE they happen so that newcomers to the area, or just folks who want to keep up on what is going on, can be aware of fun events going on around town. Having said that, we have a 6 week old baby in the house right now, so everything runs a little late these days! Anyone out there with kiddos I’m sure can relate! This morning I decided that this information is still good to know about if you are contemplating a move to Lee County and worth posting.
Friday and Saturday night, Opelika hosted their bi-annual “On the Tracks” event. This is the 14th year that the city has held On the Tracks. It’s usually in May and October, so if you did miss it this year, you can always catch it in the spring! The date for the next party has already been set for April 12, 2013.
The skinny: you can buy a ticket, get a wine glass, and walk around town to the different shops to sample their wine choice that they are hosting, sample foods from local restaurants and enjoy live music as you go. You can also just come enjoy the music and purchase food from these restaurants and an individual beverage. There is rumor that this avenue might change in the future, but as for now, it’s still a great way to enjoy the fun if you aren’t a wine enjoyer. The restaurants that participated this year were Arricia, Overall Company, Maestros 2300, Wilton’s Catering, and Club House, as well as all the favorite spots downtown—Ma Fia’s, Jimmy’s, Irish Bred Pub, Jeffersons and Café 123. Dessert was also available at the Railroad Cremery, Cheesecake Cottage and Venable’s Sweet Shop.
To make sure that you don’t miss it next year, here is the official website: www.onthetracks.org They have a good facebook presence, too, so you can always follow them there if you want updates and to keep it on your calendar for April.
The second event that went down this weekend was the annual Loachapoka Syrup Sopping! About 20,000 people from all over swarm to this small town west of Auburn in the fall to enjoy the fall festivities. Beginning in 1972, the Lee County Historical Society, Ladies Improvement Club, and the Loachapoka Ruritan Club have hosted this festival to show off the syrup that local farmers produced in the town and show how things were done in the old days. Just an all out good family fun festival, there are arts and crafts, yummy food vendors and demonstrations on how syrup is made—just to name a few of the attractions. To read more about the history of the town of 135 folks and the history of the event, visit. www.syrupsopping.org.
This week, more to come on the events leading up to Auburn’s home game against Texas A and M!
