My older sister Meg got me into running this time last year when she set a goal and ran the Mercedes Half Marathon in Birmingham.
Rankin, Brycen and I went to cheer her on as she crossed the finish line! It was so much fun, even though I wasn’t even running. I saw the positive changes running created for Meg and decided that day that a race was going on my calendar.
Never have I ever been a runner! What was I thinking?
Meg got me started on Jeff Galloway’s plan, which is very similar to the “Couch potato to 5K” Program that lots of people have used. It’s an easy, injury free way to get into running and ENJOY it. Jeff has helped thousands of folks get into running. His website is www.jeffgalloway.com. His beginner book, Running, is very basic, but it’s a great motivational tool to stick with the program and meet your goal. I have a copy if anybody wants to borrow it!
Nine months later, Brycen and I ran in the Savannah Half Marathon. It was an awesome experience and so much fun! The whole time, I couldn’t believe that I was actually going to complete 13.1 miles! They take pictures of you along the way, and in every one of them, I am smiling.
We have a great resource here in Auburn, AL with Big Dog Running. They are located at the GlenDean Shopping Center next to Chappy’s Deli. The guys in there are so helpful and friendly. It is not an intimidating store at all, and they have a world of advice to give somebody starting out.
This Thursday, February 16th, Big Dog is hosting a free clinic on Good Form Running, starting at 6:30 p.m. They help you check your form to make sure that you are not going to get hurt along the way. It’s a great clinic and very personalized. If one of your new year’s resolutions is to get in shape or just start running in general, Big Dog is a great place to check out!
This is my husband Brycen and me, heading to pick up our race packets in Savannah!
